What is Lead Acid Battery
The Lead-acid battery is one of the oldest types of rechargeable batteries.Lead-acid batteries can be classified as secondary batteries. The chemical reactions that occur in secondary cells are reversible. The reactants that generate an electric current in these batteries (via chemical reactions) can be regenerated by passing a current through the battery (recharging).
Benefits of Lead Acid Battery
Amp Hours
What many battery owners fail to realize about lead acid batteries is that its capacity (Ah) rating is usually specified at the 20 hour discharge rate. At high rates of discharge above 20A the usable capacity can be reduced to less than half due to “Peukert's Effect”. A 225AH Lead acid battery at an 80A discharge rate may only run for 53 minutes.
No Voltage Drop
Voltage Curve is nearly flat giving out higher voltage and power through out the entire discharge cycle. A 12V Lithium Ion Battery has little to no voltage drop while cranking your motor. This provides around 25% faster starting than with a lead battery. When cranking your motor with a lead battery the voltage can drop down to 9V causing your starter to spin slower.
Charge Efficiency
When charging a lead acid battery you can lose between 15 – 30% of the energy between your charger to the battery due to heat loss. A battery is 99.1% efficient and will accept nearly 100% of the power from your charger, solar panels, or other energy generating technologies.
Charge Algorithm
Lithium Ion Batteries can be charged with constant current and constant voltage (CC, CV). This means that almost any battery charger regardless of the algorithm can charge a battery. An algorithm typically slows down the current flowing into the battery from the charger. Lead Acid batteries heat up and swell if they receive constant current so charger manufacturers create algorithms to slow down the current protect the battery from over heating. A LiT® battery will not heat up while charging.
Types of Lead Acid Battery
Starting, Lighting, and Ignition (SLI) Batteries
These batteries are commonly used in vehicles, providing the necessary power to start the engine, power the lights, and operate other electrical systems.
Deep-Cycle Batteries
Deep-cycle batteries are designed to provide a steady amount of power over an extended period. They are often used in renewable energy systems, golf carts, forklifts, and marine applications.
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Batteries
VRLA batteries are maintenance-free and sealed, making them suitable for applications where regular maintenance is not feasible. They are commonly used in telecommunications, emergency lighting, and UPS systems.
Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries
These batteries require periodic maintenance and are commonly found in older vehicles and industrial applications.
Application of Lead Acid Battery
Renewable Energy Storage
Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power are gaining popularity as the world seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and transition to more sustainable forms of energy. However, the intermittent nature of these energy sources makes them less reliable than traditional power sources such as coal and natural gas. Lead-acid batteries can be used to store excess energy produced by renewable sources, which can then be used to power homes and businesses when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. Lead-acid batteries are an ideal solution for renewable energy storage because they are cheap, easy to maintain, and have a long lifespan.
Telecommunications
Telecommunications networks rely on uninterrupted power to function. In areas with unreliable or no access to the power grid, lead-acid batteries are often used to provide backup power for cell towers and other communication infrastructure. The batteries are usually connected to a charger that is powered by the grid or solar panels, ensuring that they are always charged and ready to provide backup power in case of an outage.
UPS Systems
Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems are critical in ensuring the continued operation of computer systems and other electronic equipment during power outages. Lead-acid batteries are often used in UPS systems because they are reliable and can provide a high level of power output for an extended period of time. They are also relatively inexpensive compared to other types of batteries and are easy to replace when they reach the end of their lifespan.
Electric Forklifts
Electric forklifts are becoming increasingly popular in warehouses and other industrial settings due to their lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact compared to their gas-powered counterparts. Lead-acid batteries are often used to power electric forklifts because they are cheap, reliable, and have a long lifespan. The batteries can be recharged overnight and provide enough power for a full day's work.
Lead Acid Battery Components
Battery Case
The battery case is like a sturdy shell that protects the internal components from damage and provides structural support.
Positive and Negative Plates
These plates are the main energy-storing components of the battery. The positive plate is made of lead dioxide (PbO2), while the negative plate is made of pure lead (Pb). They react with the electrolyte to generate electrical energy.
Electrolyte
The electrolyte is a mixture of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and water (H2O). It facilitates the chemical reactions between the plates, allowing the battery to store and release electrical energy.
Separator
The separator is a porous material placed between the positive and negative plates. It prevents direct contact between the plates while allowing the flow of ions, enabling the movement of charge during the battery's operation.
Terminal Posts
These are the connection points on the battery that allow for the transfer of electrical energy to external devices. They are typically made of metal and provide a secure connection.
Vent Caps
The vent caps are small openings on the battery case that allow the release of gases produced during the charging and discharging processes. They help maintain the optimal pressure inside the battery.
Handle
Some batteries come with handles for easy transportation and installation. They provide a convenient way to carry the battery and ensure a secure grip.
Battery Terminals
These are the metal connectors located on the battery's top surface. They provide the electrical connection points for external devices or circuits.
How do Lithium-Ion and Lead Acid Batteries Compare?
Cost
The one category in which lead acid batteries seemingly outperform lithium-ion options is their cost. A lead acid battery system may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars less than a similarly-sized lithium-ion setup - lithium-ion batteries currently cost anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 including installation, and this range can go higher or lower depending on the size of system you need.
Capacity
A battery's capacity measures how much energy can be stored (and eventually discharged) by the battery. While capacity numbers vary between battery models and manufacturers, lithium-ion battery technology has been well-proven to have a significantly higher energy density than lead acid batteries. This means more energy can be stored using the same physical space in a lithium-ion battery. Because you can store more energy with lithium-ion technology, you can discharge more energy, thus powering more appliances for longer periods.
Depth of discharge
A battery's depth of discharge is the percentage of the battery that can be safely drained of energy without damaging the battery. While it is normal to use 85 percent or more of a lithium-ion battery's total capacity in a single cycle, lead acid batteries should not be discharged past roughly 50 percent, as doing so negatively impacts the battery's lifetime. The superior depth of discharge possible with lithium-ion technology means that lithium-ion batteries have an even higher effective capacity than lead acid options, especially considering the higher energy density in lithium-ion technology mentioned above.
Efficiency
Like solar panel efficiency, battery efficiency is an important metric to consider when comparing different options. Most lithium-ion batteries are 95 percent efficient or more, meaning that 95 percent or more of the energy stored in a lithium-ion battery is actually able to be used. Conversely, lead acid batteries see efficiencies closer to 80 to 85 percent. Higher efficiency batteries charge faster, and similarly to the depth of discharge, improved efficiency means a higher effective battery capacity.
How to Choose Lead Acid Battery
Understand the Types of Lead-Acid Batteries
The first step in choosing the right lead-acid battery is to understand the different types. There are three main types:Flooded Lead-Acid Battery: This is one of the oldest and most common types of lead-acid batteries. As the name suggests, the battery is flooded with electrolyte, which is a mixture of water, sulfuric acid, and lead. They require regular maintenance, and water levels need to be topped up regularly.
Consider Capacity and Voltage
The subsequent step involves determining the appropriate capacity and voltage required for your specific application. The battery's capacity is typically measured in ampere-hours (Ah), and it is crucial to select a battery with sufficient capacity to adequately power your devices. The voltage output of the battery should also be considered, as different applications require different voltage levels. For example, a solar power system may require a 12V battery with a capacity of 100Ah, while an electric vehicle may require a 48V battery with a capacity of 400Ah.
Evaluate Performance and Lifespan
When choosing a lead-acid battery, it is essential to consider the performance and lifespan of the battery. The battery's performance is determined by its discharge rate, which is the amount of energy that the battery can deliver over time. A battery with a high discharge rate is better suited for applications that require a lot of power in a short time.
Process of Lead Acid Battery
Lead powder manufacturing
The lead powder machine, special equipment for electrolytic lead, is made into a lead powder that meets the requirements through oxidation screening. The first is to cut qualified lead bars into lead balls or lead segments; the second step is to put the lead balls or display details into the lead powder machine, and the lead balls or lead components are oxidized to form lead oxide; Put it into the designated container or powder storage bin; Then it can be used, after aging for 2-3 days and passing the test. When making lead powder, it is necessary to control the degree of oxidation, apparent density, water absorption, and particle size.
Grid casting
The lead-antimony alloy, lead-calcium alloy, or other lead alloys are made by continuous casting to meet the requirements of the grid. The grid is the active material carrier and the conductive current collector. Ordinary open battery grids are generally cast with lead-antimony alloys, maintenance-free battery grids are usually released with low antimony alloys or lead-calcium alloys, and sealed valve-regulated lead-acid battery grids are usually cast with lead-calcium alloys.
Plate manufacturing
After mixing lead powder, dilute sulfuric acid and additives, smear it on the surface of the grid and then dry and solidify it, that is, the unformed plate. The plate is the core part of the battery, and its quality directly affects various performance indicators of the battery. The first step in the production of paste-coated plates is to use special equipment for testing qualified lead powder, dilute sulfuric acid, and additives to make a lead paste; in the second step, the lead paste is filled on the grid with a smear machine or by hand; The third step is to solidify and dry the filled plate to obtain a unformed plate.
Plate formation
The positive and negative plates used in battery assembly refer to the positive and negative plates formed by a redox reaction with dilute sulfuric acid under the action of direct current to generate lead oxide, and then cleaned and dried. Plate formation and battery inner formation are different methods in the battery manufacturing process, which can be selected according to specific conditions.
Assemble the battery
Assemble different types of plates with other numbers in different kinds of batteries according to different needs. There is a big difference between the assembly of automotive batteries and sealed VRLA batteries. Sealed VRLA batteries require tight assembly and AGM separators, while automotive batteries generally use PE, PVC, or rubber separators.
How to Maintain Lead Acid Battery
Keep the Battery Charged
To ensure optimal performance and longevity, it is indeed important to consistently fully charge lead-acid batteries. Frequently discharging the battery to a low level can result in a gradual loss of its capacity over time. Using a solar panel or charger to keep the battery charged can help extend the battery's life.
Monitor the Electrolyte Level
If you're using a flooded lead-acid battery, it's essential to monitor the electrolyte level regularly. The battery's plates should always be submerged in the electrolyte, and the electrolyte level should not go below the minimum mark. Regularly monitoring the density of the electrolyte is crucial to ensure it remains within the recommended range.

Store the Battery Properly
If you're not using the battery for an extended period, it's essential to store it properly. For storage purposes, it is advisable to keep the battery in a cool and dry location, away from direct sunlight and any sources of heat. You should also disconnect the battery from any devices or chargers before storing it.
Check the Battery Regularly
Regularly inspecting the battery is crucial to identify any signs of damage or corrosion that may be present. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect the battery casing, terminals, and wiring for any indications of wear and tear. If you observe any damage or corrosion, it is advisable to replace the battery for optimal performance and safety.
