What is 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

2v deep cycle agm battery are engineered for use in demanding conditions, such as extreme abuse, longer-than-average storage times, extreme weather, and frequent starts.agm stands for absorbent glass mat, which refers to the battery's internal structure. Instead of utilizing flooded lead plates, an agm battery contains fiberglass mats that transfer the electrolyte solution between plates. This design offers several benefits compared to traditional flooded batteries.

Benefits of 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

Durability
2v deep cycle agm battery are far less susceptible to damage caused by vibration and shock when compared to lead acid. This quality is particularly useful for truck owners who spend time on uneven terrain such as mud, rocky trails, and other off-road destinations.

Resistance to heat and cold
Extreme temperatures wreak havoc on a traditional flooded lead acid battery's lifespan. An agm battery is much more resistant to loss of power and lifespan brought about by scalding heat and frigid cold, making it less likely to give up right when you need it most.

Variable mounting options
Lead acid batteries must be mounted with the posts facing up (or to the side-on-side terminal batteries) to prevent the electrolyte solution from leaking out of the case. Since the electrolyte is suspended in an agm battery, the battery can be mounted on its side. This characteristic is useful in custom applications where space is limited.

Rapid recharges

Conventional flooded lead acid batteries feature a high internal resistance, requiring slow, low-amperage current to charge effectively. By comparison, 2v deep cycle agm battery have a far lower internal resistance, allowing them to absorb current far more rapidly than conventional flooded lead acid. These differences lead to much shorter recharge times.

Longer service life

Typical 2v deep cycle agm battery can start a vehicle approximately 60,000 times before failure-that's nearly three times as many starts as conventional flooded lead acid batteries. This quality provides 2v deep cycle agm batterywith a much longer service life-up to 10 years in ideal conditions.

Enhanced deep cycle capabilities

"Deep cycling" Refers to draining most of a battery's power before recharging it. This term is commonly used to describe rv and overland auxiliary battery setups that see considerable use before recharging. 2v deep cycle agm battery offer far better deep cycle capabilities than conventional flooded lead acid, featuring a dod (depth of discharge) of 80 percent versus a flooded lead acid's 50 percent.

Types of 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

There are two main types of AGM batteries available in the market; automotive AGM batteries and deep cycle AGM batteries. Automotive AGM batteries are particularly suitable for modern cars with Stop-Start technology and also large prestige vehicles.Deep cycle AGM batteries are commonly used in recreational applications that require high power, fast charging capability, maintenance free operation and resistance to vibration.

Application of 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

Renewable Energy Storage
Solar panel systems require batteries that can withstand frequent charge and discharge cycles. Offering longevity and consistent performance, AGM batteries fit this bill. A study in Urban Science titled 'Energy and Economic Analysis of Renewable Energy-Based Isolated Microgrids with AGM and Lithium Battery Energy Storage: Case Study Bigene, Guinea-Bissau' analysed renewable energy-based microgrids, highlighting the economic viability and reliable performance of AGM batteries, particularly in systems with photovoltaic capacities below 700 kW (1).

Uninterrupted power supply systems
UPS systems also rely on AGM batteries. In environments where consistent power delivery is paramount, be it in hospitals or data centres, the quick reaction time and reliability of AGM batteries become indispensable.

Marine and Recreational Vehicles
AGM batteries are widely used in marine applications, such as boats and yachts, as well as in recreational vehicles (RVs), due to their resistance to vibration, spill-proof design, and ability to operate in various orientations.

Emergency Lighting Systems
The reliability and maintenance-free nature of AGM batteries make them suitable for emergency lighting systems, ensuring a consistent power supply during outages.

How to Choose 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

Step 1: determine your battery type

There are a number of battery types such as AGM, VRLA, wet cell and gel. You first need to check that you are actually working with an AGM battery. More importantly, you need to ensure that you are not working with a gel battery. This is because all of the batteries mentioned above, except for gel batteries, can be charged with an AGM battery charger. Gel batteries are more sensitive to charging and require specially designed chargers. For this reason, gel batteries should not be charged with an AGM battery charger. It is not that an AGM battery charger cannot charge a gel battery, because technically it can, but it is not recommended because it will harm the gel battery in the long-run. After confirming that you are dealing with an AGM battery and not a gel battery, move on to the next step.

Step 2: determine your battery size

We don't mean the physical size of the battery, as in the dimensions, but rather how many amp hours your battery stores. For example, a typical solar AGM battery is 100 amp hours, so a 10 amp AGM battery charger would take about 6 hours to completely charge it, assuming it is 50% discharged. Alternatively, you can double the amp of the charger from 10 amp to 20 amp, cutting the charging time in half to only 3 hours. How did we calculate the time it takes to charge the battery? Well, it's very simple actually. Take the amp hour rating of your AGM battery and divide it by the charger's rating (amps), and then add about 15% for the additional time to entirely top off the battery.

Step 3: determine the desired charging performance

In this final step, you will need to determine the level of charging performance you have in mind. For example, if you just need a charger to keep your motorcycle, boat, classic car or aircraft charged during the off season, then a smaller charger with less amps is fine. Charging a battery with a smaller charger would require more time, but that shouldn't be a problem since you won't need to use your off-season battery for a while. However, if you are looking for a charger that can quickly restore a battery in a vehicle you regularly use, such a wheel chair, then a more powerful charger with higher amps would be required. It's probably safe to assume that nobody wants to wait all day for their wheelchair battery to recharge.

Steps to Charge an 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

1

Connect the Charger Properly
First, ensure the charger is unplugged from the wall. Then, connect the positive lead (usually red) to the positive terminal of your battery and the negative lead (usually black) to the negative terminal. Make sure these connections are secure to avoid any accidental disconnection during charging.

2

Select the Correct Charging Mode
If your smart charger has multiple settings, select the one specifically for AGM or deep-cycle batteries. This ensures that the charger delivers the appropriate voltage and current for your battery type.

3

Begin the Charging Process
Plug the charger into the wall socket and turn it on. The charger will likely begin in bulk charging mode, which delivers a high current to quickly bring the battery up to around 80% of its capacity.

4

Monitor the Absorption Stage
Once the battery reaches about 80% charge, the charger will automatically shift to absorption mode. In this stage, the voltage remains constant while the current decreases. This slower charging phase ensures the battery charges fully without overheating.

5

Float Charge for Maintenance
After the battery is fully charged, the charger will enter float mode. At this point, it will maintain the charge at a safe level, preventing overcharging and keeping the battery ready for use. You can leave the charger connected during float mode without worrying about damaging the battery.

How to Maintain 2V Deep Cycle AGM Battery

Check battery condition
Routine battery inspection is always important. It is especially advisable prior to the winter season. Following all safety rules and wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)- such as safety glasses or face shield, rubber gloves and protective clothing-your technician should perform a full inspection of the batteries in your vehicle fleet. Check for any cracks, broken pieces, leaks or other damage to the case. Check battery hold/tie-downs.

Perform battery connection maintenance
Inspect cables and connections to be sure they are tight and clean. Examine the terminals or posts to be sure they are not stripped or scuffed. Connections should be cleaned to remove any dirt and corrosion. Coat unsealed connections with dielectric grease.

Perform a load test
A load test is essential to determine the condition of the battery. In essence, it mimics the strain placed on the battery by the starter and other auxiliary items. An electronic tester simplifies the procedure. Begin with a fully-charged battery. For AGM batteries, an Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) of at least 12.6 is required. Then disconnect the negative ground cable. With the tester, you will need to enter the exact information to get an accurate reading: the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), battery type (AGM versus Flooded) and battery temperature. The tester will then load test the battery and provide the test results.

Keep batteries fully charged
Any reprieve from outdoor cold can help your battery, thereby becoming less impacted by cold temperatures. Parking in a garage or other enclosure when possible is best. Battery warmers are also helpful. For vehicles in the shop, using a charger/maintainer while the vehicle is being serviced will help recharge the battery, keep it from discharging to freezing levels and offset loads during the repair or Preventive Maintenance (PM) service.Chemical reactions within the battery are slowed down by the cold, so recharging takes longer. During cold weather, make sure that scheduled trips provide an adequate opportunity for a vehicle's alternator to fully recharge the battery.

FAQ

Q: Is an AGM battery worth the extra money?

A: AGM batteries have a longer lifespan than traditional flooded batteries. Moreover, not only do they serve for a more extended period when they perform the same tasks, but they also last longer when they are not in active use.On regular basis at 25°C for 12V deep cycle AGM batteries, float charge voltage is 13.5V~13.8V, cycle charging voltage is 14.4V~15.0V. Some batteries are marked with charge voltages on the label or print, including float charge voltage and cycle charge voltage.

Q: What is the lifespan of an AGM battery?

A: About seven years
AGM batteries keep the battery's electrolyte in a solid, or absorbed, state that can impressively provide two to three times the lifespan of a flooded battery. AGM batteries last about seven years and are ideal for vehicles with start-stop technology.Replacing an AGM with an EFB or conventional battery would be like using the wrong spare part. The battery life is shortened, and the performance of the Start-Stop and comfort functions of the vehicle are not guaranteed.

Q: What size AGM battery do I need?

A: As a basic rule of thumb, you can remember that a 100Ah AGM deep cycle battery can provide 1 amp for 100 hours, 2 amps for 50 hours, 3 amps for 33 hours,... Keep in mind this is a rough estimate, as the battery capacity will change a little depending on how fast your battery is being drained.

Q: What kills AGM batteries?

A: AGM batteries are 12 volts, like all car batteries, and can handle some higher voltage, but only up to a certain point. If a car alternator charges an AGM battery with a voltage higher than 15 volts, it can damage an AGM.

Q: Does my car really need an AGM battery?

A: With twice the capacity of standard flooded car batteries, AGM batteries charge faster and are created specifically for vehicles with higher power requirements, such as cars with fuel-saving start-stop features, or possibly even some cars with high-tech features such as dash cameras and remote starting systems.

Q: Will a regular battery charger ruin an AGM battery?

A: This is also why an AGM battery needs special charging. Regular battery charging can break AGM batteries. Regular batteries need 15-17 volts to get the same amps. However, voltage greater than 15 volts can overheat an AGM and generate enough pressure to pop its safety valve.

Q: How long will a 100ah AGM battery last?

A: This means the 100ah battery will last for 20 hours before needing a recharge. This simple math can make a big difference in planning your power usage. Knowing what is ah in battery and how to use it can save you from unexpected power shortages.

Q: Can you jump start an AGM battery?

A: As mentioned above, jump starting AGM batteries is very straightforward. That said, our Booster PAC and Jump-N-Carry traditional jump starters use AGM batteries in them and are legendary for their power and durability. Whether jumping flooded batteries or AGM, they answer the call day after day, year after year.

Q: Should AGM batteries be kept fully charged?

A: In the case of AGM batteries, lead acid is what is used, and it reacts in a different way when partially charged. All Absorbent Glass Mat batteries have to be fully charged to 100% percent in order to maintain their capacity. That being said, there's one rule that you should remember: a battery charger specifically made only for flooded cell batteries should NOT be used on VRLA batteries (including gel and AGM batteries).

Q: Do AGM batteries need a special alternator?

A: In most cars, the alternator charging system is mostly intended for the standard flooded lead-acid batteries. It will mostly mean the alternator charging system is not well equipped to charge or optimally work with AGM batteries. Using the alternator to charge your AGM battery may pose a serious risk to your battery.

Q: Is 15 volts too high for AGM battery?

A: AGM batteries are 12 volts, like all car batteries, and can handle some higher voltage, but only up to a certain point. If a car alternator charges an AGM battery with a voltage higher than 15 volts, it can damage an AGM. It's not likely, but voltage fluctuations are a possibility.

Q: How can you tell if an AGM battery is bad?

A: However, if it fails to go higher than 10.5 volts after a full charge, chances are it has a dead cell or two. Additionally, if it is fully charged but the reading on the lead-test meter is equal to or less than 12.4 volts, it shows that the battery is sulfated. This is usually a red flag and is a sign of severe damage.

Q: Why is my AGM battery draining so fast?

A: Newer batteries can mostly resist the freezing winters and scorching summers, which usually severely affect the battery's ability to hold its charge. But if you own an older AGM battery, intense hot or cold temperatures can weaken its performance or kill it altogether.

Q: What voltage is too low for a 12-volt AGM battery?

A: That's why the recommended corrective maintenance charge voltage (when charging a single 12-volt AGM battery) should be between 14.4 to 15.0 VDC, and the preventive maintenance charge voltage should be between 13.5 to 14.1 VDC. Never use a recharge voltage less than 13.50 VDC on AGM batteries…you'll regret it.

Q: What will ruin an AGM battery?

A: Unlike a flooded-cell battery, an AGM can be immediately damaged by overheating the electrolyte. Once the water boils from the electrolyte through a pressure sensitive venting valve, it can't be replaced. If you are selling your vehicle soon they may not always be the most economical option, but if you plan on holding onto your battery for a while, then upgrading to an AGM battery is definitely a good idea.

Q: Is it worth upgrading to an AGM battery?

A: This means that an AGM battery is easier to recharge than a wet battery after a long standstill period. An AGM battery can also withstand extreme external temperatures and has large power reserves. A conventional starter battery responds to great heat and cold with a rapid decrease in capacity and discharges faster.

Q: Can you bring a dead AGM battery back to life?

A: Here's the magic fix: When an AGM battery won't charge by ordinary means, simply connect a second, well-charged battery (12.4 volts or greater) in parallel with the dead unit-positive to positive, negative to negative. Then connect the charger to the pair.

Q: How long can an AGM battery sit unused?

A: These batteries if not used within a month must be maintained. If the voltage drops below 12.4 these batteries must be boosted up to full charge. Bottle Supplied (BS) – dry AGM batteries are shipped with the electrolyte stored in a plastic container.

Q: Can I charge an AGM battery with a regular charger?

A: Different chargers have different capabilities - Although under normal conditions most 12-volt automatic battery chargers will work on an AGM battery, the battery will only charge to about 80 percent of its full capacity. Many newer battery chargers have settings specifically for AGM batteries.

Q: Can I switch to an AGM battery in my car?

A: Did your vehicle come from the factory with a flooded lead acid battery? If so, you can upgrade to an AGM battery and reap the benefits of its more durable, maintenance-free design. When the AGM battery dies, you can replace it with another AGM or go back to a normal battery.
